Extreme Couponing Basics

When implementing a plan of extreme couponing 101, you have the potential to spend less than 70% on just about everything you buy.  Anyone with the time, motivation and know- how can get into extreme couponing.  It requires making important tasks a learned behavior over time.  The rewards can be great, so if there are some mistakes starting out, realize that if you stick with it, it will work out in the end.

So how should you start?

Lots of Coupons

Get coupons from newspapers, mailers, friends, family and the internet.  Get as many relevant coupons that your family could use as often as you can.  Coupons in the right hands are like money and are valuable.  Be sure those hands belong to you

Organization

When you have your coupons make sure to organize them in a manner which is best for you.  Many people chose to organize in coupon holders by product, others organize in files and there are some who even keep an excel spreadsheet.  Keep them in a way that you can make sure to not miss any expiration dates, and keep them handy for when sales arrive.

Motivation

Extreme couponing saves money, but it should also meet a motivating need for yourself and your family.  Find a motivator such as saving for your kid’s college education, paying off a specific debt or even as simple as saving for a family vacation latter in the year.  I guarantee, if you work hard to achieve your goal and see the savings start to roll in, it gets much easier to stick with the program.

Planning and Self Discipline

Extreme couponing requires knowing all the details.  Your mate may like only a specific brand coffee.  Maybe, this is the only brand of coffee he or she drinks.  You must be willing to possibly go without your favorite brand of coffee for a few weeks.  Why?  Because you try to avoid paying full price for any items when you can help it.  Why buy coffee full price when you will have the opportunity to buy the same product for less than half or even free at a later date?  This leads to the very final tip.

True Couponing vs Extreme Couponing

True Couponing

I was asked by a subscriber recently. “What is the difference between “true couponing” and “extreme couponing”? My answer is simple. It’s all in how you look at what you are doing. Many of those who proclaim true couponing consider it a realistic method of saving by using coupons. I can understand that rationale considering how “extreme couponing” behaviors are displayed on the popular TLC Extreme Couponing program. But I tend to think of these two terms meaning the same.

How to Organize Coupons

How to Organize Coupons

Knowing how to organize coupons is not as simple as it sounds.  In fact, there are multiple ways to organize coupons based on product, brand, price, expiration date and so on.  It may vary what exactly works for you when you are organizing and when you are using them while shopping.  I will share my favorite way which has made shopping so much easier.

So you have made your coupon binder, you have your coupons and dividers and you are ready to go right?  Sure, but how does it all fit in.  Knowing how to organize coupons can save a lot of headache and lost time and effort.  Extreme couponing 101 is best when you are able to use the most coupons consistently at the right time.  Many agree that the simplest way is to organize first by category.  Using this method, you can easily determine where to locate a coupon depending on the type of product it is.
